The best analysis of Malcolm X - People have made numerous attempts to analyze, classify and form theories about Malcolm X and what he stood for, forgetting that for someone of his caliber, it is not easy to do this. To even attempt to understand Malcolm X, you would have had to know of his life experiences and how they laid the foundation of what he became. This book gives you that information, and most importantly, it is from his point-of-view. That is why I believe this book gives the best analysis of who Malcolm X was and what he stood for. Malcolm X was one of the most inspiring and articulate leaders that has ever lived and this book is a testament of that. This autobiography is very powerful and for anyone looking to learn more about Malcolm X, I cannot tell you of a better place to start.
Malcolm X, The real story from a real source - Many people know too little about Malcolm X, and what they know is usally one sided or incorrect. This book which is brilliantly written presents the whole life of Malcolm X. It starts from when he was a child facing the racism from locals and the KKK ,and getting sent to a foster home,on through his hustler years and onto become one of the strongest voices in the African American struggle for human and civil rights. Not only does this book captivate the reader but it will present you with a new idea of American history and culture. This is a must read for anyone wanting to find out about one of the strongest voices during the 1960 s and to learn more about the all too real problems the were and still are in American today.
Superb - Malcolm X is possibly my favourite figure in North American history (though that isn t saying much ,-) and this book does him justice. While usually I stay clear of autobiographies due to there obviously subjective nature, I made an exception in this case because one of the most interesting aspects of Malcolm X , to me, was his life long intellectual development and the charismatic and powerful way in which he articulated his views. Thus an autobiography is an ideal way to get inside the mind of a person, and trace their line of thought and progress. This book does this superbly, and is both gripping and interesting throughout. It should reveal that calling Malcolm X a racist in reverse , would be like condemning Ghandi solely as being anti british , i.e. highly simplistic and greatly missing the point. A further strength to the book is that Alex Haley provides a highly insightful biographical foreword that helps set the scene for those unfamiliar with Malcolm X. The book is at times amusing in it s anecdotes, and some of iconoclastic statements delivered by Malcolm X. The downside of the book is that, as it is an autobiography, it lacks the third person analysis that a biography would contain, thus it doesn t really analyse issues such as who was really responsible for his assassination. It also rarely describes any media appearances Malcolm X made, thus we miss out on some of the important points Malcolm X made and believed in.Overall I highly recommend this book, as do nearly all those who have read it.
A interesting development in a harsh changing world.4.5 STAR - While Malcolm X and I would disagree on a number of things, I really liked this book. The tale of the mans history alone is worth reading even if he wasn t a figure that has effected american culture. Malcolm X was not a stagnant figure he was changing as he learned. He progressed from a huslter to disiciple to a leader and in these transitions he learned to challenge his beliefs and the beliefs of others. Malcolm X was a man who at the time of his death began to challenge the hatered of others and his own hatered. The second fasinating thing about this book is that the book is told in a real time manner. So that you actaul see the transitions in ideas of X. Huxley did a great job as ghost writer. The third thing that is great is seeing the interal workings of the nation of islam. I am an atheist yet this was very fasinating to me. I disagree with alot of the nations views on race, but understanding racism starts with understanding the philosophy of the racist and the ignorance that that philosophy premotes. The theroy of the disemiation of races given by the nation is one of the most inconcieveable things I have ever read.
